Quick answer: Most larger cruise ships use Gruž, which is not the same place as the walled Old Town. Plan a bus, shuttle or taxi in both directions. Tender arrangements and berths vary, so confirm the actual port information for your sailing.
First confirm where the ship is arriving
“Dubrovnik” can mean a berth at Gruž or a tender arrangement closer to the historic centre. The correct transport advice depends on the day. Read the ship’s port information before you leave and note where the return transport departs.
Bus, shuttle or taxi
A cruise-line shuttle is simple but may cost more. Local public transport can be good value but becomes busy when several ships arrive. Taxis suit groups and time-sensitive plans. Whichever you choose, keep enough local currency or an accepted payment method and do not leave the return to the final possible service.
Crowds and heat
Dubrovnik’s Old Town and walls can become extremely busy and exposed. An early start improves photographs and comfort. If walking the walls is your priority, book the correct official ticket and build the rest of the day around it rather than treating it as a quick extra.
Our experience
The Old Town is visually extraordinary and absolutely worth seeing, but transport and crowd planning shape the day. We enjoyed it most when we stopped racing the clock and concentrated on the historic core.
