Belfast in 48 Hours: Everything We Tried to Fit In

Belfast in 48 Hours: Everything We Tried to Fit In

We arrived in Belfast with roughly 48 hours, a very ambitious list and the sort of tiredness that comes from travelling since half four in the morning. It was our first visit, and we wanted a mixture of history, culture, food and a little bit of Belfast nightlife without turning the weekend into a military operation.

Where we stayed

We travelled with Jordan’s family for his sister Harry’s 30th birthday and stayed in an apartment within reach of the city centre. Having shared living space worked well for the group, and from the apartment we could see towards the Titanic Quarter in the distance. Our first priorities were coffee, getting changed and working out how to fit the city into a very short weekend.

Getting around Belfast

We used a sightseeing bus ticket covering two days. For a first visit with limited time, it helped us connect the central area with places around the Titanic Quarter while also giving us an overview of Belfast’s history and neighbourhoods. We passed some absolutely stunning buildings and quickly realised that the architecture deserved more attention than we had allowed in the plan.

Belfast is a city where history is not tucked away in one museum. It is visible in streets, memorials, murals, buildings and the conversations around you. At points we chose to step back and be respectful when we did not fully understand the context. That felt more appropriate than confidently narrating something we had only just encountered.

Food and the market

Finding food became an important part of the itinerary—partly because we love trying things and partly because travelling that early had left everyone starving. The market was lively and gave us plenty to look at while deciding what to eat. Some waits were longer than expected, but the food we chose was worth it and added to the feeling that we were experiencing the city rather than simply racing between attractions.

Titanic Belfast

Titanic Belfast was the major attraction of the weekend and the place we would most confidently recommend. The building itself is striking, but the exhibition is much more than a dramatic exterior. It explains Belfast’s shipbuilding industry, the people involved and the Titanic story in a way that feels detailed and personal.

The experience was fascinating but understandably sad. Even if you arrive knowing the broad story, seeing the scale of the work and the human details makes it feel much more real. We also visited the surviving ship connected with the same fleet, which added another layer to the history. The fact that it served through the First World War and remains preserved is impressive in its own right.

If you only choose one paid attraction during a short Belfast visit, this would be our pick. Give it enough time rather than squeezing it into the final hour of the day. There is a lot to read, watch and absorb, and rushing would take away from the experience.

What we missed

A lot of Game of Thrones production took place around Belfast, and there is a studio attraction near the Titanic area. We did not have enough time to include it, which is one of the clearest reasons we would return. Our weekend showed us plenty, but it also demonstrated that 48 hours is only an introduction.

Is Belfast good for a weekend break?

Definitely. Belfast works well for a weekend because the centre is manageable, major attractions are accessible and the city offers a strong mixture of history, architecture, food and atmosphere. Two days were enough for highlights, but not enough to feel finished.

Our advice is to choose two or three priorities, use the sightseeing bus if it suits your plans and leave some room for wandering. Belfast deserves curiosity and respect rather than a checklist. We left impressed, slightly exhausted and already discussing what we would do next time—which is normally a very good sign.
