The distance changes the decision
Official Tuscany tourism describes Livorno as roughly 100 km from Florence and 20 km from Pisa. Florence is therefore not the same type of easy port day as Valletta. Delays, transfers from the secure port area and the final connection back all matter.
Excursion or independent travel?
A ship excursion costs more but simplifies port pickup and normally provides protection if its own transport is delayed. Independent travel gives freedom and may cost less, but you carry the risk of missed connections. Check the ship’s all-aboard time, not the advertised departure time.

Florence deserves several days. A cruise visit is a taste, so build a day that can succeed without entering every famous building.
