Quick answer: West Midlands Safari Park says the Safari Drive normally takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, but it can take more than two hours on busy weekends and school holidays. For a first visit, allow most of the day if you also want to explore the Safari Walk, stop for food and use any separately charged rides.
Our ExploreAlotLife video below shows what the safari felt like on our visit. Current timings and ticket arrangements can change, so the practical details in this guide were checked again on 20 August 2026.
How long is the West Midlands Safari Drive?
The official park guidance gives a typical driving time of around 90 to 120 minutes. The route itself is approximately four miles long, but this is not a normal four-mile drive: animals, viewing opportunities and queues determine the pace.
On peak dates the park warns that the drive can exceed two hours. Weekends, bank holidays and school holidays are the obvious times to allow more margin.
Do you need to do the Safari Drive first?
No. West Midlands Safari Park says you can use the Safari Walk before or after your booked Safari Drive slot. That gives you flexibility if your drive slot is later in the day or if you want to start with the walking attractions.
During the summer season, Safari Drive time slots are selected when booking online. The drive closes earlier than the rest of the park, so check your exact date rather than assuming the final park closing time is also the final safari entry.
How long should you allow for the full park?
For a relaxed first visit, we would treat West Midlands Safari Park as a full-day attraction. A two-hour drive already uses a substantial part of the day, and the Safari Walk, food stops and optional rides add more time.
- Safari Drive only: roughly 1.5–2 hours in normal conditions
- Busy Safari Drive: potentially more than 2 hours
- Drive plus Safari Walk: allow a substantial half-day at minimum
- Drive, Walk and rides: plan around a full day
Are the rides included?
The park’s suggested day itinerary separates the Safari Drive and Safari Walk from the Adventure Theme Park rides. Ride wristbands or individual ride tickets are charged separately, so factor that into both your budget and your timing if rides are important to your visit.
Can you drive around more than once?
Standard admission terms currently state that the Safari Drive is included once during its operating hours. Annual Passholders have different access arrangements. Check the exact ticket you are buying rather than assuming you can repeat the circuit.
What makes the drive take longer?
- School holidays and weekends
- Heavy traffic within the safari route
- Animals close to or crossing the road
- Visitors slowing for photographs
- Weather or operational changes
The park specifically advises visitors to expect congestion at busy times. Do not schedule something important immediately after the minimum 90-minute estimate.
Our practical verdict
The Safari Drive is the main event rather than something to squeeze in before another attraction. Give it time, accept that the pace is partly controlled by animals and other cars, and use the walking areas around your assigned drive slot rather than trying to force the whole day into a rigid timetable.
