Lake Kournas Crete: Is It Worth Visiting? Turtles, Pedalos and How to Get There

Quick answer: Lake Kournas is worth visiting if you want a slower nature stop between Chania and Rethymno. It is Crete’s largest natural freshwater lake, is protected within the Natura 2000 network and offers swimming, lakeside walking, boating and wildlife spotting. A few hours is enough for most visitors, although it is easy to stay longer for lunch or a swim.

What is Lake Kournas?

Lake Kournas sits a few kilometres inland from Georgioupolis, near the boundary between the Chania and Rethymno areas. Visit Greece describes it as Crete’s natural freshwater lake, surrounded by hills and fed by mountain water. Its water level rises in winter and falls in summer, when sandy shoreline can appear.

The lake reaches a maximum depth of about 22.5 metres and forms part of a protected wetland environment. That makes it quite different from the island’s beaches and archaeological sites and is a good reason to include it in a road trip.

Can you see turtles at Lake Kournas?

Possibly, but never treat wildlife as guaranteed. Official Greek tourism information lists turtles among the animals found around the lake, alongside water birds, eels and other wetland species. Keep your distance, avoid feeding wildlife and remember that the lake is a protected ecosystem rather than an animal attraction.

Can you swim or hire a pedalo?

Swimming and small-boat or pedalo trips are common activities at Lake Kournas. The easiest access is around the developed shore where tavernas and boat-hire businesses operate. Seasonal water levels change the amount of exposed shoreline, so the lake can look noticeably different between visits.

Boat-hire prices are commercial rather than fixed official admission charges, so compare the current offers when you arrive instead of relying on an old online price.

How long do you need at Lake Kournas?

Allow around two to three hours for a relaxed first visit if you want a pedalo or swim, time around the shore and a drink or meal. You could spend less than an hour for a quick look, but that misses the reason for coming. The lake works best as a slower stop rather than another box to tick.

How do you get to Lake Kournas?

Visit Greece directs drivers from either Chania or Rethymno towards Georgioupolis on the national road, then onto the local road towards Lake Kournas. The lake is about 4 km inland from Georgioupolis.

Seasonal public-bus services can also operate from Chania through Georgioupolis to the lake. Timetables change, so check KTEL Chania-Rethymno for the date you intend to travel rather than relying on a timetable copied into an old blog post.

What else can you combine with the lake?

  • Georgioupolis: coastal village and beach a few kilometres away
  • Kournas village: traditional inland village above the lake
  • Argyroupolis: springs, greenery and archaeological remains
  • Chania or Rethymno: make the lake a countryside stop between the two cities

Our practical verdict

Lake Kournas worked because it felt completely different from the busy coastal stops around Crete. The lake itself is the attraction: go to slow down, get onto the water if conditions suit, look for wildlife and enjoy the landscape rather than expecting a long list of ticketed things to do.
