Quick answer: Cruise ships calling at Toulon can use either the Toulon Côte d’Azur terminal in the city centre or the separate La Seyne-sur-Mer Cruise Terminal on the opposite side of the bay. If you berth in Toulon, the centre is immediately accessible on foot. If you berth at La Seyne, use the ship/port sea shuttle when offered or the local Mistral transport network to cross the bay. Check your exact terminal before making plans.
Our ExploreAlotLife P&O Azura video from 10 June 2026 is embedded at the end of this guide. The transport information below was checked again on 20 August 2026.
Why does Toulon cruise port have two terminals?
The Ports of Toulon Bay operate two different cruise-arrival points around the harbour. The Toulon Côte d’Azur Passenger Terminal sits in Toulon itself, while the La Seyne-sur-Mer Cruise Terminal is across the water and is designed to handle some of the largest cruise ships visiting the bay.
This is the most important thing to understand before planning a Toulon port day. A cruise itinerary may simply say “Toulon”, but the practical journey into the city depends on which side of the bay your ship actually uses.
If your ship docks at Toulon city-centre terminal
This is the easiest option for independent sightseeing. The official port describes the Toulon terminal as a city-centre stop. Once you leave the terminal you are already beside the waterfront and within easy reach of the old town, harbour, shops, cafés and local transport.
You do not need a shuttle simply to reach central Toulon. Walking is the sensible default for the historic centre unless mobility needs or extreme heat make that uncomfortable.
If your ship docks at La Seyne-sur-Mer
La Seyne is a separate cruise terminal across Toulon Bay. The official port says a dedicated sea-shuttle service between the cruise terminal and Toulon city centre can be provided by the shipowner or terminal operator. The direct crossing is listed at about 10 minutes.
Whether that dedicated shuttle is free, paid or available at all can depend on the cruise line and the individual call. Do not assume it is included: check the information supplied on board before leaving the ship.
Can you use public transport from La Seyne?
Yes. The local Réseau Mistral network operates the 8M boat-bus between Toulon and La Seyne. The official port also lists the Mistral network as an independent transport option for La Seyne cruise passengers.
The public 8M service is not the same thing as a cruise-line shuttle. Its timetable is seasonal and it serves public pontoons rather than pulling up specifically for your ship. The port’s current passenger guidance says the Espace Marine stop is around a 15-minute walk from the La Seyne cruise terminal.
For summer 2026, Réseau Mistral lists the 8M as a regular Toulon–La Seyne boat-bus with seasonal timetables. Always check the live timetable on the day because service patterns can change.
Which option is best from La Seyne?
- Ship or port shuttle: easiest when offered, because it is designed around cruise passengers.
- Public 8M boat-bus: useful independent option if the shuttle is not suitable or you want more flexibility.
- Taxi/VTC: possible, but the port recommends booking La Seyne taxis or private cars in advance.
- Stay in La Seyne: completely valid if you do not actually need to go into Toulon; La Seyne has its own waterfront, market and historic shipyard area.
Can you walk from La Seyne cruise terminal to Toulon?
Not as a sensible cruise-day transfer. The two terminals sit on opposite sides of a large natural harbour, so the useful connection is across the water or around the bay by road. If your aim is central Toulon, use the maritime connection or another form of transport rather than trying to turn it into a long walk.
How much time should you allow to get back to the ship?
Work from your ship’s all-aboard time, not the published sailing time. If you are berthed in La Seyne, allow additional margin for the return boat or road transfer and the walk back through the terminal. Do not plan to take the final possible public connection.
Weather, harbour operations, passenger queues and seasonal transport changes can all affect a port day. A useful rule is to treat the outbound journey as a test: if the transfer into Toulon takes longer than expected, increase the buffer for the return.
Is Toulon cruise port walkable once you reach the centre?
Yes. Central Toulon is compact enough to explore a substantial amount on foot. The waterfront, old-town streets, Cours Lafayette market area and the Musée national de la Marine are all part of the central sightseeing zone.
If you want to go to Mont Faron or the Mourillon beaches, you will need to add local transport or a taxi rather than treating them as part of a compact old-town walk.
What should you check before leaving the ship?
- Your exact berth: Toulon or La Seyne-sur-Mer
- Your ship’s all-aboard time
- Whether a dedicated cruise sea shuttle is operating
- Whether that shuttle is free or chargeable
- The current Réseau Mistral 8M timetable if travelling independently
- The final return connection you are comfortable using
- Any mobility requirements, especially for the walk between the La Seyne terminal and public transport
Our practical recommendation
If you berth directly in Toulon, keep the day simple and explore independently on foot. If you berth at La Seyne, use the dedicated cruise shuttle when its timing works for you; otherwise the public boat-bus gives you an independent alternative. The mistake to avoid is planning a Toulon day without first knowing which terminal your ship is actually using.
